Pigs-
In efforts to expand the farm, we have started raising and breading pigs. Our first pig is a boar; we have named him Dozer… as in Bulldozer. He is 50% Tamworth, 25% Yorkshire and last 25% either Hampshire or Tamworth??? He free ranges in the woods (secured with an electric fence) so that he can do what pigs do... rut around eating roots, plants and bugs. He is also supplemented with fresh vegetables scraps from our garden and NON-GMO feed.
We now (8/18/14) have a gilt (young female hog) on the property; we have her paddock adjacent to Dozer’s so when the time comes we can move him over there. Her name is Daisy… She is100% Berkshire (great tasting meat). After we give her a couple weeks to get use her new surroundings, we are planning on breading the 2 together… Lord willing we should have some piglets around the beginning of December.
UPDATE: As of Oct 18th 2014, the two hogs have been "put" togather... Lord willing we will see some little pigletts in a few months...
UPDATE: as Oct 12, 2015, all the hogs are gone... Dozer and Daisy have moved on to another farm and we have taken 4 hogs to the butcher. So if you are interested in pasture raised and GMO-Free pork contact us.
